"Great news as Toyota and Mazda announce they are bringing 4,000 JOBS and investing $1.6 BILLION in Alabama, helping to further grow our economy!" said Trump.

We asked our Facebook audience why they think Toyota and Mazda passed over North Carolina for an auto production plant.

Toyota actually already operates an engine assembly plant in Alabama, located only 22 km away from the site of the future joint factory. It produces most of the cars and trucks it sells in the those USA plants and exports some of those cars to other markets. Production is expected to begin by 2021.

Toyota had originally planned to build a new Corolla plant in Mexico, but after the joint venture plans were announced in August, Toyota changed course and made a decision to build the Tacoma pickup at the plant in Mexico and the new Corolla at the new USA plant. " Elsewhere in the state, the auto industry continued to power forward in 2017".

He suggested Alabama's concentration of existing automotive industry infrastructure likely gave the state a stronger selling point to project leaders. The state assembled more than 1 million vehicles in 2016 at plants employing nearly 40,000 workers.

That's a familiar stage for Alabama-built Hondas. And since the start of vehicle production in Alabama in 2001, Honda has built almost 4.5 million vehicles and engines.

"The partnership between Mazda and Toyota will expand innovative automotive manufacturing in Alabama", said Gov. Kay Ivey.

The State of Alabama is the fifth largest producer of cars and light trucks nationally with a strong automotive manufacturing presence including Toyota's engine plant in Huntsville, where Toyota employs 1,400 workers.

The joint-venture plant will be Toyota's 11th USA manufacturing facility.

Limestone County is preparing a mega site for the estimated $1.6 billion plant.

The plant is expected to start building cars in 2021, and will eventually churn out 300,000 vehicles per year.

Other key announcements included an $85 million expansion for Honda, the first of a multi-phase project to improve vehicle manufacturing flexibility, strengthen the logistic efficiency for future models and prepare for future technologies.
