Oprah's Golden Globes Speech Sparks Rumors of Presidential Run

President Oprah?

Shows about women in stories that grappled with class, race and sexism win big at the Golden Globes

Oprah Winfrey's powerful speech about female and black activism won the most attention, sparking calls by fans on social media for her to run for U.S. President in 2020.

Before receiving the award a series of clips showed Oprah's biggest moments, from her work as the creator and host of The Oprah Winfrey Show, in addition to her roles as actress, producer, businesswoman, author, spokeswoman and everyone's favorite audience gift-giver.

But there is little indication that the 63-year-old actually wants the job.

The drumbeat was well underway.

Oprah herself had in October 2017 said there is no running for office of any kind for her.

But that didn't sit well with several prominent personalities, who complained that she had not denounced her father, President Donald Trump, who has been accused of sexual harassment and assault by several women.

After being awarded the Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement, she talked about race, gender and the fight for equality and even discussed the forgotten story of Recy Taylor, a woman who tirelessly fought for justice after she was raped in 1944. "So I want all the girls watching here now to know that a new day is on the horizon. We also know it's the insatiable dedication to uncovering the absolute truth that keeps us from turning a blind eye to corruption and to injustice", she declared. "Now I'm thinking, 'Oh, oh.'" Winfrey said before, not specifically mentioning Trump - but it can be inferred she was speaking of the current president.

Oprah has always been an extremely influential cultural figure, but will her influence extend to politics?

She also spoke to women who don't have the same fame and power that others who have come forward have had to defend themselves.

Her voice periodically appears in national debates and she's never shied away from the political arena. Or is she secretly a Democrat who hates her father? He pointed out the sexual misconduct scandals and jokingly said, "For the male stars in the room, this will be the first time in months that it won't be terrifying to hear your name read out loud".

Speculation of Winfrey's presidential ambitions had at least one tangible effect on Monday. That helped drive Weight Watchers share up as much as 13 per cent to $52.96 (U.S) in NY, the biggest intraday gain in two months.
