Get ready for Storm Eleanor

In Spain, two people were killed when they were swept away by a huge wave on the northern Basque coast.

Bookmaker Coral is giving odds-on at 10-11 that the wind speed reaches as high as 100mph in mainland United Kingdom this week, with the firm also offering odds of 3-1 for this month to end as the wettest January on record and 6-4 for it to be the coldest January ever in the UK.

In anticipation of 3-metre flood surges, the country's flood barrier on the North Sea was also being activated, the first time it has been pressed into service since a storm in 2014.

"We have seen some heavy showers push through across the south of the United Kingdom along with hail, loud thunder and lightning", said meteorologist Becky Mitchell.

Wind speed of more than 110 km per hour was recorded at Amsterdam airport, where hundreds of flights were cancelled, while four people were seriously injured as gusts of up to 147 km per hit France.

Air transport wasn't the only mode of transportation disrupted.

Major roads near Duisburg and Juelich in the west were also partially blocked because of toppled trees and flooding.

British Airways has cancelled some flights today as Storm Eleanor brings fales force winds and torrential rain to the United Kingdom and parts of continental Europe.

Crews from less affected areas have been mobilized and will travel to assist technicians in the still-affected areas, mainly in the northwest and northeast parts of the country, to restore power to customers there, said the company. Conditions in Switzerland were no better as 14,000 homes were without power in several Swiss cantons. However, it did reopen later in the day.

'Gusts of 50-60 miles per hour are likely fairly widely with some gusts reaching 65-75 miles per hour along exposed coasts and over high ground in the west.

Motorists are being warned to watch out for residual debris and standing water, and a weather warning remains in place.

The forecaster says it will remain extremely windy on Wednesday morning with stormy conditions in the west.

And the Environment Agency issued a flood alert for Worcestershire.
