Girl found after woman killed, infant taken in west Charlotte, suspect at-large



Jonathan Bennett sparked a shootout at around 11 p.m. on Thursday when he ambushed a group of officers in the parking lot of the police department, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney said. Police are still searching for the murder suspect, John Bennett. Bennett and the woman had an infant child together, and Bennett took the child with him following the shooting, police said.

When they arrived, police found 24-year-old Brittany White shot and killed inside the home, and here baby missing.

Police have yet to say where they found Journei, who is not quite 3 months old.

He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt and tan cargo trousers. Bennett was last seen driving an older white Ford Expedition with NY license plates HUP-3071.

Our CBS affiliate WBTV is reporting that a 2-month-old girl that was the subject of an Amber Alert in west Charlotte Thursday has been found safe and unharmed.

A man who claims to be a neighbor and friend of Bennett said he was surprised to hear about the incident. "I've never seen no aggression out of him", said Rahshawn Johnson.

"Do the right thing, John". You know what's right. "You gotta live with it so clear your heart", said Johnson.

Bennett rap sheet includes previous charges that include assault on a female, communicating threats, and misdemeanor larceny, according to WCNC.

Thursday's killing marks the city's first homicide of the year, and the first since December 22, following a particularly deadly year in Charlotte.
