Georgia Bulldogs down Oklahoma in Rose Bowl

Baker Mayfield's Oklahoma career runs out of magic in Rose Bowl classic

Two plays later, Mayfield bought time with his feet, waiting for his primary target, fullback Dimitri Flowers, to wheel around the back of the end zone, where Mayfield delivered a dart. Georgia's defense, porous in the first half, had not let Oklahoma advance past midfield in the third quarter. The Heisman victor was happy.

On Monday night following the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs' 54-48 double-overtime win over the No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners in the Rose Bowl, Bulldogs linebacker Davin Bellamy explained why he yelled "humble yourself" at Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Even so, Riley gave Stoops a vote of confidence on Wednesday morning.

Smith, named the defensive player of the game in the Rose Bowl, said players understand the win was only a step to the team's ultimate goal.

"Our return team practiced squib kicks in Athens because we knew [Oklahoma] had done that this year", Georgia special teams coach Shane Beamer said.

It was a bit unexpected, however. "He figured we were just going to [field the kickoff and] take a knee, so [head coach Kirby Smart] called the next play". "I respect them. They came out and fought".

Georgia was still down by 14, though.

And the Sooners failed to salt away the lead in regulation before failing to score a touchdown in overtime. He just didn't hit it well and ended up going right to their guy, which that's the one thing you can't do and we did. Smart's task was to make players who had some success understand they were capable of much more. Oklahoma managed only 171 yards and one touchdown in the second half and OT.

It's a good looking trophy, but the big prize for Oklahoma (12-1) and Georgia (12-1) is a spot in the College Football Playoff championship game in Atlanta on January 8.

Mayfield then threw an incompletion and an interception that was wiped out by a penalty on the second drive.

A laughing Beamer said that he reacted to the swiftness of the comeback "the same as everyone else did: 'Oh my god!"

The whole Alabama-Georgia concept was still very fresh in those moments after the big Sugar Bowl win.

Everyone said Jake Fromm couldn't beat Oklahoma. "No one in this locker room stopped believing".

"Sony came up to us and he was like, 'y'all keep doing what y'all do". The Bulldogs' scout team can provide impressively accurate renditions of Mayfield's top tendencies, such as his slick ability to move forward through a collapsing pocket before making a throw right at the line of scrimmage.

Of course it couldn't be that easy.

On Georgia's ensuing offensive possession, Oklahoma got a huge break when the Sooner defense forced a fumble by the Bulldogs' Sony Michel, and safety Steven Parker scooped up the loose ball and returned it 46 yards for a go-ahead Oklahoma touchdown.

Michel and fellow senior Nick Chubb set the FBS record for most combined rushing yards by running back teammates with 8,284 yards, and will extend their lead in the national championship. "It's not done", Michel said. We know we're getting the best from him all the time. "My team just had faith in me", said Michel, who did all that damage on just 11 carries and got a hug from former Bulldogs great tailback Garrison Hearst after scoring the winning TD.

Instead, Brown and fellow All-American tackle Bobby Evans helped embarrass Georgia defense which allowed just 112.6 rushing yards and 270.9 total yards per game.
