Backcourt boosts OR past No. 11 Arizona State

Oregon at No. 17 Arizona tops the Pac-12 this week

OR forward M.J. Cage (4) battles with Arizona State forward De'Quon Lake (35) for a rebound during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game, Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018, in Tempe, Ariz.

OR has that at every position, and that plus a slow pace was what swung the game in favor of the Ducks in a 76-72 upset loss for the Sun Devils on Thursday.

Kianna Ibis leads ASU with 13.5 points per game (17.8 in Pac-12 games), while Jamie Ruden (10.8 off the bench) and Sabrina Haines (10.2) are in double figures. It was a close game the rest of the half. Other 2018 opponents for the Beavers who will open the season ranked include No. 10 Stanford (at home May 11-13), No. 16 UCLA (at home May 24-26) and No. 19 Cal State Fullerton (at home March 9-11). Sophomore Mikayla Pivec has handled much of the point guard duties, and she hadn't played the position since the seventh grade. Washington State's Borislava Hristova was the Pac-12 player of the week after averaging 32.5 points per game last week.

OR wasn't as effective in turning points into turnovers - 13 points from turnovers, compared to Arizona State's 14.

However, the pecking order of the conference was thrown out of wack when the previously-undefeated Sun Devils fell to both Arizona and Colorado in consecutive games before defeating Utah in Salt Lake City last weekend. Instead, Ira Lee's three-point play on a breakaway stuff and Trier's 3-pointer cut the lead to 22-21 with 3:11 to go, and neither team could score again before halftime. Kodi Justice had 21 points, Evans 19 and Tra Holder finished with 14. OR only made eight of its 31 attempts, but those eight and 14 offensive rebounds were the decisive aspects of their win. "They came in and worked their butts off (Tuesday) and they want to get better".

This year's team is in a similar boat as the 2013-14 one.

The Sun Devils had 13 total rebounds at the half and OR had 10 alone on the offensive glass, good for a total of 20.

"It was a physical game".

Coming up from McKale Center on Thursday, the Oregon State Beavers and the Arizona Wildcats will be meeting up in college basketball activity. "Defense-to-offense, we had a lot of great plays". "They do a really good job".
