"When winter weather impacts our ability to collect blood, we can count on our national inventory to ensure that hospital and patient needs are met", says Peter MacDonald, director of donor relations for Canadian Blood Services' Atlantic region. According to the Red Cross, blood donations decline in the winter, in part because seasonal illnesses and inclement weather can result in canceled blood drives. "It's the blood on the shelves that helps save lives in an emergency".
One of the best types of bloods to donate is O Negative as it can be used on anyone. Presently, the biggest necessities are Type O negative and B negative blood donations, as well as blood platelet donations often needed by cancer patients.
Type B negative: The blood type that can be transfused to type B Rh-positive and negative patients. RapidPass can now be completed on mobile devices and through the Blood Donor App.
