Nathaniel Clyne 'could face three more months out after surgery'

Nathaniel Clyne ruled out until February

Nathaniel Clyne undergoes back surgery, out until next year

Last season he played all but one of Liverpool's 38 Premier League games, making a total of 41 appearances in all competitions.

Klopp also revealed that Liverpool had shown the England international's back problems to multiple specialists all around the world in an attempt to find a solution to his long-term absence.

Klopp had earlier said on Clyne's injury, "Nathaniel is working hard on his rehab and we have kept a close eye on his progress, but the reality is we are looking at some time still before he is back and available for selection".

The former Southampton defender has not played since sustaining the injury in a pre-season match against Tranmere and now could be out until February.

The player originally returned to light training with the club in September, however, he suffered a further setback.

"He was in a good way and then had a little setback".

As a result, young talents Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold are expected to continue filling in.

Perhaps the biggest indicator of the injury was his name missing from the list of Liverpool group stage Champions League squad.

It now remains to be seen if Liverpool dip into the market in the January transfer window to get a replacement for Clyne.

Indeed, Gomez has taken his chances to the point that he was called up to Gareth Southgate's England squad for their November friendlies against Germany and Brazil, making his global debut in the 0-0 draw with Germany at Wembley and marking himself as a genuine challenger for his clubmate's place on the plane for Russian Federation in the summer.
