Jurors in Menendez Trial Tell Judge They Are Deadlocked

Menendez jury tells judge they cannot reach a verdict; to come back tomorrow

Menendez jury deadlocks, judge orders them to keep trying to reach a verdict

Jurors told the judge Monday they couldn't reach a unanimous verdict on whether Menendez was guilty.

In response, Walls told the jurors to go home, take the rest of the day off, and come back Tuesday ready to deliberate more.

During arguments in a Newark, New Jersey, courtroom, prosecutors painted 63-year-old Menendez as the "personal senator" to Florida ophthalmologist, Dr. Salomon Melgen. Bob Menendez's federal corruption trial are getting a chance at a fresh start.

Arroyo-Maultsby was dismissed so she could go on a pre-arranged vacation. After a private discussion with those jurors, Walls allowed deliberations to continue until he received the note from the jury about the deadlock. Robert Menendez's bribery case said they began deliberations on Monday with nine of them - including herself - prepared to find him not guilty of the most serious charges. The excused juror subsequently spoke to the press and said she believes the panel will end in a hung jury.

"(Prosecutors) just didn't show me enough, and I just wish I wasn't going on vacation", Arroyo-Maultsby said.

Headed into court Monday, Menendez told reporters that he "wished she hadn't left". The only question remaining is how many more days the judge will demand jurors deliberate before he throws in the towel and declares a mistrial. "And I want you to come back here tomorrow to continue deliberations", he said. Walls said the comments have had no effect on the jury and told the attorneys, "She was on your side". The Democrats have 48 seats in the Senate compared to Republicans' 52.

If Judge William Walls formally declares a mistrial, the Justice Department could refile the charges, former federal prosecutors said in CNN's report. If he's cleared of all wrongdoing, or at the very least, able to keep sentencing at bay until after January 16, 2018 - when GOP Gov. Chris Christie leaves office - Republicans would lose any leverage to push for his ouster.
