John and his father stopped to help, but the driver, 20-year-old Dorii Rogers and her passenger, 20-year-old Alesia Maddox, were dead. He was buckled into a vehicle seat and suffered only minor injuries.
A 1-year-old child who was buckled into a vehicle safety seat was the only survivor of a freeway crash in Harper Woods early Monday morning that killed four other people, including a Macomb County man, police said. The driver of a 2006 Buick SUV was thought to be speeding in the left lane before losing control.
"The baby was in the auto seat", witness John Wade told WXYZ-TV.
But no one could save the others who were going too fast and not wearing seatbelts.
The Buick SUV was speeding down Interstate-94 in Harper Woods when the driver tried to pass another auto, lost control, careened across the lanes, and ended up striking the bridge around 1 a.m., the Associated Press and the Detroit Free-Press reported.
"I lost three, but I gained one", said Lolonda Maddox, mother of 20-year-old Alesia Maddox and 18-year-old Armonie Maddox, who both died in the crash. Rodgers, Alesia Maddox and Armonie Maddox were Detroit residents. "That was the only thing that probably ... saved the baby".
Police say the child also was in the SUV and had minor injuries.
"Just the amount of carnage I guess involved in this crash, it kind of set a lot of people back", explained Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw.
Michigan State Police said speed and wet weather may have been factors in the deadly crash.
