In 2012, a North Korean soldier scaled three barbed-wire fences to defect to the South.

He suffered a gunshot from North Korean forces and is recovering in hospital after arriving in South Korea, the military said.

"Our military has taken in a North Korean soldier after he crossed from a North Korea post towards our Freedom House", the statement said, referring to a building on the South side of the village which is bisected by the border.

It was not immediately known how serious the soldier's injuries were or why he made a decision to defect.

The man has told South Korean police that he crossed the Civilian Control Line as he meant to enter North Korea for "political purposes".

Moon also said Seoul will double the amount of its contribution to the South Korea-ASEAN fund, from seven million dollars a year to 14 million by 2019. After he was apprehended, he told officials that he had meant to go to North Korea to meet its leader, Kim Jong-un.

"With the North Korea situation at an important phase, the role China ought to play is very big", Abe said.

More than a million mines are believed to be buried inside the zone.

For this, the two countries will strengthen strategic talks on all levels, presidential spokesman Yoon Young-chan told reporters in Danang, Vietnam, where a meeting between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and China's Xi Jinping was held on the sidelines of an APEC summit.

The president said he will visit all ten ASEAN member states before his presidency ends, and also send special envoys to key members of the regional bloc.

At Panmunjom, North Korean soldiers wearing lapel pins with the images of late North Korean leaders often use binoculars to monitor visitors from the South. This makes the area a popular stop for visitors from both sides.
