When Bill [Belichick] called and said they claimed me, I was like, 'No [expletive] way.' We had a quick conversation. "I wasn't catching it", Allen said. Bennett says he got three other opinions who said that he needed to have the shoulder fixed.
Bennett has claimed the Packers knew about his shoulder injury, pushed him to play through the injury and released him to avoid surgery and a trip to injured reserve. But when his former team, the New England Patriots, called and told him they have claimed him off waivers, everything changed and Bennett knew he just had to continue playing this season. "Let's go, '" he added. Bennett was listed as questionable because of the shoulder, but is active and joins Rob Gronkowski, Dwayne Allen and Jacob Hollister at tight end in Denver on Sunday night.
With the chance to return to New England, where Bennett was a big part of the Patriots' Super Bowl champion team past year, the veteran tight end said he'd eschew surgery on his shoulder and play.
"I think the group of guys on this team couldn't be a better place for me to, with what I'm going through right now, this situation, it couldn't be a better place for me, all the familiar faces and friends and things like that", he said.
"It wasn't where I was, it was just about the injury", he said. Bennett had a limited impact in green and gold, averaging a little more than three receptions and 33 yards per game with the club.
Tight end Martellus Bennett is back, and he is ready to play through some serious pain.
"When I got here, I landed at 2:30, got to the hotel, had to be back at the facility at 5:45", Bennett said.
