According to The Huffington Post, the Federal Bureau of Investigation report is the most complete information on hate crimes in the divisive election year 2016, and supports data from the Southern Poverty Law Center, which documented a wave of such events in months after elections.
Of the incidents motivated by religious bias, slightly more than 50 percent of the reported offenses were anti-Jewish and about one-quarter were anti-Muslim, according to the FBI's data. Of the incidents spurred by hatred of a particular religion, anti-Semitism was again the leading cause, motivating about 55 percent of those episodes, followed by anti-Muslim sentiment, which spurred about 25 percent. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) found in its annual census of hate groups and extremist organizations that the number of hate groups in the country increased from 892 in 2015 to 917 in 2016. Crimes fueled by bias against LGBT people rose from 203 in 2015 to 234 previous year.
Of the 6,121 criminal incidents reported, 6,063 were single-bias incidents (there were also 58 multiple-bias incidents). A report from the department's hate crimes task force is due next year, but Mr. Sessions noted noted other steps being taken in the meantime - highlighting the DOJ's decision to appoint a prosecutor from the civil rights division to assist prosecution of a man accused of killing a transgender teenager.
"It's deeply disturbing to see hate crimes increase for the second year in a row", Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan A. Greenblatt said in a statement, according to The Washington Post.
Hate crimes happened in a variety of locations. In Ogden there were 4 reports of hate crimes against someone's sexual orientation; in all there were nine reports of sexual orientation hate crimes.
The remaining incidents were motivated by a gender identity, disability, or gender bias. "The end result is loss - loss of trust, loss of dignity, and in the worst case, loss of life". The report also identified more than 1,600 people who committed hate crimes by damaging, vandalizing or trying to destroy property.
