"I knew that after a year ago I had so much love and emotion from the people, but I didn't finish the race as I wanted".
But there was more to come, as his young son delivered an emotional message over the team radio.
"I love Brazil, but at the moment I will not go back (to live)".
"I take so many great memories with me as I prepare for my final two races in Brazil and Abu Dhabi, and although they will be emotional, I am looking forward to ending on a high note and preparing for a new chapter in my career", Massa added.
"I managed to pass him on the re-start, but after that it was so hard".
Speaking later to Sky Sports, Massa said: "It's so hard to explain my feelings today".
Raikkonen started and finished third at Interlagos for Ferrari, recording his third-straight F1 podium finish for the first time since he raced for Lotus in 2013, but struggled to keep up with Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas ahead throughout the race.
"Last year I had such fantastic emotion, walking through the pit lane, but I was missing the result". I managed to overtake Alonso, which was very important for me as I knew he would have better pace than me.
"I'm happy for him".
"Unfortunately the cars this year in this kind of place they can be very hard to pass and it gets a bit boring unfortunately". Zero mistakes. I tried to put pressure on him. I drove a ideal race from beginning to end, managed the tyres, managed everything around the vehicle, the pace I had. Last year Massa had announced his retirement and, after retiring late in the race, walked back to the pits in tears while draped in the Brazilian flag.
"Today was definitely like a victory and to finish the race and feel the emotion of the people after such an incredible race". That's why I did another year. "It is a race I will never forget".
"We're very unlikely to make a decision in short order", Lowe, who joined from champions Mercedes earlier in the year, told reporters.
