The wider Nifty50 of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) traded above the psychologically important 10,000-mark.
Market breadth was positive with 1,094 advances against 463 declines.
The equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty opened in the green, after closing lower yesterday.
"Sectorally, except IT and energy, all the sectors of broader market have closed in the negative".
On the other hand, Bharti Airtel (0.99%), Coal India (0.83%), Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (0.65%), Asian Paints (0.51%), Tata Motors (0.43%), and ICICI Bank (0.41%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.
The BSE Mid-cap Index is trading up 0.25% at 15,844, whereas BSE Small-cap Index is trading up 0.51% at 16,797.
On Thursday, the markets overcame a volatile day of trading to close with huge gains.
Tata Consultancy Services topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 156.15 million. The September quarter earnings season is expected to be subdued due to the impact of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
On the currency front, the rupee strengthened by 13-14 paise to close at 65.14-15 against the U.S. dollar from its previous close at 65.28.
Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 29.97 points, or 0.13 per cent, to 22,860.65, the S&P 500 gained 3.11 points, or 0.12 percent, to 2,553.75 and the Nasdaq Composite added 13.77 points, or 0.21 per cent, to 6,601.03.
