"Girl Scouts remains committed to and believes strongly in the importance of the all-girl, girl-led and girl-friendly environment that Girl Scouts provides, which creates a necessary safe space for girls to learn and thrive", the organization said.

Smaller Cub Scout dens will be either all girls are all boys, while the larger Cub Scout packs will have the option of single-gender or mixed-gender.

The Boy Scouts of America announced Wednesday it will admit older girls into programming, saying values are important for both young men and young women. They will be able to join as Cub Scouts in 2018 and join a program to become Eagle Scouts the following year.

The Boy Scouts of America said its decision is focused on serving families.

"I think it's what's best for her".
