The dates of Assembly elections in Gujarat are also likely to be out soon as earlier on Tuesday, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Achal Kumar Joti had announced that the Gujarat Assembly Election will be held in December this year.
Gujarat and Himachal's legislative tenures end in January, 2018. He also added that voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) system, that was first used in Goa polls earlier this year, will be used in over 50,000 booths in Gujarat.
The Election Commission is likely to hold a two-phase poll in Gujarat and single-phased polling in Himachal. Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh recently incited a revolt with most of the party's 36 legislators threatening to side with him if he is not given a free hand to run the party's campaign. The dates for another election-bound state, Gujarat will be announced later, may be possibly next week.
These elections of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh may mark anti-incumbency factor. "Assembly Elections will mostly be conducted in December", Jyoti said. The strength in the 182-member Gujarat House now comprises 115 BJP MLAs, 61 from the Congress, two from the NCP, and one from JD (U). Prime Minister Narendra Modi has begun campaigning for his party in his home state and visited it last week. Since 1985, the state has never re-elected an incumbent and the Congress and BJP have exchanged power. Both the parties will be contesting the elections from all 68 assembly seats.
