Police say someone is calling residents and seeking donations for a fund set up by Somerville police in Remigio's honor.
An off-duty MA police officer has died from injuries sustained in a collision on Interstate 95 in New Hampshire on Sunday, according to Somerville Police.
"His loss will be immeasurable in the Somerville Police Department, and today we grieve as a community for Officer Remigio, for his family, and for his brothers and sisters in the Somerville Police Department", Curtatone said in the statement.
Remigio was riding his 2003 Harley Davidson southbound on I-95 when a 2013 Mercedes-Benz C300 driven by Michael Ricci, 18, of Burlington, crossed into Remigio's lane and struck him, according to New Hampshire State Police.
Since the crash, Remigio, had been on a ventilator at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
A decorated MA police officer who died a day after being struck by another vehicle while riding his motorcycle off-duty was remembered Tuesday for his professionalism, courage and friendliness. He is facing charges of felony reckless conduct charge and has since posted a $10,000 cash bail at Rockingham County Jail in New Hampshire. His vehicle struck Ricci's vehicle from behind following the initial collision between Ricci's and Remigio's vehicles, according to state police.
Remigio joined the department in March 1988. He most recently served as a motorcycle officer in the department's traffic unit.
"While on-duty for the Somerville Police last month during a major incident in Davis Square that resulted in evacuations and significant road closures and massive traffic, Louis assisted throughout the night as a true leader", the department said.
"Louis does it all, and seeks no recognition", the post stated. "He truly goes beyond the call of duty".
Remigio, of Tewksbury, was a single father of two girls, after his wife passed away previous year.
Remigio leaves a wife and two daughters, as well as extended family.
