So my takeaway is that this is now a no-excuses year for Jared Goff. The first thing people have to remember is Jeff Fisher isn't the coach anymore.

But more on all that in a bit. The No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft broke his foot last May and was never right during the 2016 campaign. He neglected to surround Goff with the necessary infrastructure to help nurture him in the transition from college to the NFL. This includes more short to intermediate routes from the wide receivers to keep the chains moving.

It was a recipe for disaster for a young quarterback from whom so much was being expected. We know Elliott is elite and will come back as an asset for your team.

In the months that followed, they went about crossing off items with admirable meticulousness.

"It doesn't say anything", said Bills GM Brandon Beane about what the trade means for Taylor. He could fill a gap for now, or he might be a long-term answer at wide receiver.

And from the draft, dependable, productive Eastern Washington wide receiver Cooper Kupp and athletic tight end Gerald Everett were added.

Tavon Austin is the biggest threat on the Rams' offense.

Watkins can play a role similar to the one DeSean Jackson played in Washington the past four years for McVay, who was the Redskins' offensive coordinator.

Washington went from being the 25th-best passing offense in 2013 to being a top-five unit in each of McVay's final two seasons with the team.

Advantage Watkins, who was hyped coming out of a football powerhouse program and has athletic ability for days.

A difference maker, if you will. Even when he's not open, he's still kind of open because he finds a way to catch the ball.

The Rams shockingly acquired Watkins and a 2018 sixth-round pick from the Bills in exchange for cornerback E.J. Gaines and a second-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Watkins is a 24-year-old former fourth-overall pick who brings an element of speed, athletic ability and production the Rams haven't had in years. He has just 153 catches for 2,459 yards and 17 touchdowns in 37 career games, which pale in comparison to other receivers taken after him three years ago. He played in just half of the games of the season, racking up just 28 receptions for 430 yards and two touchdowns scored.

Some huge changes at 1 Bills Drive after Thursday's night's preseason opener.

Simply having Watkins on the field should make the game easier for Goff and the other receivers. Yes they drafted Nathan Peterman but it's impossible to think he's the future of this team.

The biggest victor, of course, is Goff. But Webster's familiarity with Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips' system - playing on Phillips' Denver Broncos defenses the past two years - gave him an advantage and ultimately won him the job.
