The report run by few media channels is misleading, ' the government clarified via Twitter.

The shortage of oxygen led to the encephalitis, which is a sudden onset inflammation of the brain, following which the children died.

He and his Health Minister Siddharthnath Singh quoted figures of child deaths in August over a period of three years and after the BJP government came to power to claim that the deaths have occurred due to vector-borne diseases like Japanese Encephalitis highly prevalent in the region. But officials said there was nothing extraordinary about the outstanding amount and the hospital, the biggest in Purvanchal, is not facing any fiancial crunch.

"We will be getting more liquid oxygen cylinders tonight or tomorrow, and have also cleared the dues of the supplier", Kumar said.

Officials in India are investigating why dozens of children have died at a hospital in Uttar Pradesh province in the past week and whether the spate of deaths is linked to a disruption in oxygen, a district magistrate said Friday.

Sources said 23 children died on Thursday and seven more on Friday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is deeply saddened over the Gorakhpur Baba Raghav Das Medical College tragedy that has claimed 64 lives so far, informed MoS Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel on Saturday.

"Whoever is found guilty in the tragic and painful incident at BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur will certainly face stringent action", Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya told PTI in Lucknow on Saturday.

Most of those who died were suffering from encephalitis which is frequently reported case among children in Gorakhpur.

India's main opposition Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi and party Vice President Rahul Gandhi have expressed deep shock over the deaths.

The government has also ordered an inquiry.

Adityanath said, "The oxygen supply was low for about two hours, but the BRD Medical College had a system that beeped about it and after which the oxygen pressure was pumped manually".

Similarly, Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, who led a delegation to the hospital earlier, asserted that the Uttar Pradesh Government should apologize to the whole nation in regard to the same.

The hospital has, however, denied "shortage of oxygen" as the cause of deaths and said the deaths were due to Encephalitis. "Doctors are responsible for the incident", he said. "It's a serious issue".

A total number of 60 deaths have occurred in the past 5 days at Baba Raghav Das Medical College and Hospital.
