Ward vs. Kovalev 2, "The Rematch", a 12-round mega-fight for the WBO, IBF and WBA Light Heavyweight World Championships, is presented by Roc Nation Sports, Main Events, Andre Ward Promotions, Krusher Promotions and Corona Extra, sponsored by Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, Jetlux, Life10 Electrolyte, Zappos, D'USSÉ Cognac, ProSupps and Powered by Monster. After he controversially dispatched light-heavyweight rival Sergey Kovalev in the eighth round on Saturday night in Las Vegas, "SOG" once again teased fans with the idea.
Kovalev (30-2, 26 KOs), known for his formidable punching, came out charging in the opening rounds, but was left frustrated by the counter-punching of ward and frequent grabbing.
And what was the punch that played such a big role for Ward in November? But I knew what was going to happen because he (Ward) was healthy.
"The jab is a lost art today", Ward said.
"You know it's good that he's believing himself right now, that he's got the key for me, but he didn't get the key". I knew he was hurt. "It takes something to do something".
The impressive performance from Ward was marred by the ending to the fight, with a succession of borderline low blows securing the stoppage after he had initially rocked the Russian with a powerful straight right to the head. But a wicked right hook to the stomach hurt Kovalev, who unsuccessfully protested to referee Tony Weeks that it was low.
Referee Tony Weeks then stopped the fight with 31 seconds in the eighth with Kovalev, 34, kneeling down.
"I'm not trying to do better than Sergey", Bivol said. I'm sure he's made some adjustments and he's going to come harder, but I'm ready.
"Go back down there". Chief among the cleaning agents are Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev, whose rematch in the early hours tomorrow reminds us what boxing is really all about.
"He will pay for everything", Kovalev said. "You have to tell people, but instead, and I get why you have to do it, I looked at Google to see what stories are out there, and it's all about Mayweather and his circus".
Ah, but those low blows. We asked the commission for an instant replay analysis, and they did not give it to us. Now he's a good kid, I do him and he's swell but I'm telling you. The first was Chad Dawson. "Now we quieted all those who were whining and thought we didn't take it the first time".
Olympic gold medal victor Andre Ward has stopped Russian puncher Sergey Kovalev in the eighth round to win their rematch and retain his unified light-heavyweight world championship.
This controversial win will for sure cast a shadow on Ward's career, and there is no doubt that the officials of this match would be marked for a long time. It spilled over into an acrimonious buildup to the rematch, but Ward let it go after Saturday's fight. However, as he has done in the past, Ward added that he would only make the ambitious leap for the "right fight".
One man not impressed with the stoppage was former world champion, Paulie Malignaggi.
