The crew of the F-16 had planned to do a routine flyover ahead of this weekend's 2017 Vectren Dayton Air Show to familiarize themselves with the area, Heard said.

Their conditions were not known and it was not immediately clear what caused the incident, according to NBC affiliate WDTN.

Authorities say a military jet apparently practicing for an OH air show was involved in an accident.

Dayton's annual air show begins Saturday. The official numbers for the 2017 airshow will be released on Monday.

"Our first priority is taking care of our Thunderbird teammates and ensuring future safety", Lt. Col. Jason Heard said in the statement posted to Facebook.

And sure enough, nothing happened to the F-16 while it was in the air.

The plane, which slid off the end of the runway, tipped on its side and it took almost two hours to extricate the pilot and an aircraft maintainer.

Both were conscious and talking when they were extracted from the 25,000-pound plane and taken to the hospital.

The Dayton Air Show is expected to go on as scheduled but the last update from the Thunderbirds stated that their performance in the air show is to be determined.

Erik Gonsalves is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

Two pilots were trapped inside the plane.

Authorities say a military jet apparently practicing for an OH air show has been involved in an accident.

According to the USAF Thunderbirds official web site, Gonsalves is an advanced pilot and narrator with the Thunderbirds and Cordova is a tactical aircraft maintainer.
